Jori
Starr Zemel
On January 1, 2001 14-year-old, Jori Star Zemel died after a 20-month battle with
osteosarcoma. We watched as Jori withstood unbearable pain and the trauma associated with over a dozen surgeries and high dosage chemotherapy. She faced this horror with dignity, courage, and
a grace that still mystifies us.

Why Another Cancer
Foundation? Because of the
rarity of children’s bone cancer, attention is directed to more common cancers
that tend to affect adults in the late stages of their lives, such as breast
cancer, lung cancer, colon and prostate cancers. The vast majority of funding
is allocated for these cancers; therefore, survival rates have systematically
improved. Tragically, federal dollars to support
research in children's bone cancer is less than 1 percent of the total budget
for cancer research. The only way to ensure funding for
children’s bone cancers is for small organizations such as ours to educate,
raise money and fund the necessary research. We are the advocate for the
children who can not fight for themselves and for the parents who are left to
deal with the immense pain associated with watching their child suffer or succumb
from this cancer.
